Wine Education

History of Wine Part I

Last week in Sonoma I was treated to a lecture by Paul Wagner, Professor of Viticulture and Winery Technology at Napa College, as well as lecturer for three other California colleges.

Paul's particular area of expertise is wine history, and apart from reading a few books on the subject, Paul enlightened me with a number of fascinating points.

As is the case with history, it repeats itself. Furthermore, the more things change, the more they stay the same. What do I mean? Read on.

Michael's Winners & Losers

Between the tastings, touring and social engagements of Sonoma last week, I literally came face to face with about 200 wines in 4 days. I've taken a swing at listing many of them, right along with the bottle purchases in the month of July.

Also, you'll notice three "by appt. only" wineries listed for Sonoma; all three were worthwhile visits and all three make great wines at reasonable prices, in case you make it out. By the way, you can get wine direct shipped from them to you here in Georgia, since I "believe" they have purchased the direct shipping license and are NOT currently distributed here.

Tips, Tricks & Trivia

  • Blind Tasting Pits DRC Against Oregon Producer
Much like the famed 1976 tasting when Stag's Leap and Chateau Montelena put American Wine (specifically CA) on the map, here is a case where Oregon Pinot Noir tackles the very best of Burgundy. Here
  • 400 Year-Old Wine Unearthed in Jamestown, VA
The empty bottles were believed to have contained Sherry, Madeira, Claret and white wine. What's more, glass bottles, due to the inability to standardize on a volume, were forbidden at the time. More
  • Science Meets Art in Winemaking
Having just spent a week in Sonoma listening to winemakers and growers alike, it is clear that automated sensors in the vineyards, in and above the ground, are showing up more to monitor vine care at unprecedented levels. More

Ah, the lifestyles of the Rich and Heinous. This highly amusing play-by-play of an elite wine auction winner cashing in on his winning evening. More
  • The 2004 California Vintage Prediction
You may forget this 10 months from now when oaky white wines are released, or 20 months when most reds are released, but if you read "through" the article, it's saying not only low yields in grapes but potentially troublesome in reaching maturity vs grape ripeness. More
  • Now No One Is Above Short-Cuts in Wine
The Aussies were keen years ago to discover that adding wood chips in the winemaking process, rather than using expensive barrels still provided satisfactory results--the Americans followed, and the rest of the world, except France. More
  • When Scientists and Artists Disagree
One of the most talked about subjects in wine is Terroir. At a recent Sonoma conference, some of the brightest winemakers (artists or craftsman, if you will) locked horns about the Terroir subject with the cool objectivity of a leading vineyard scientist, Dr. Richard Smart. More
  • Does a Low-Carb Wine Taste Better?
Wine is naturally low in carbs, weighing in at <7 carbs per serving; in spite of that, opportunists have built even lower carb products. Now people are asking, are some of these low carb wines actually tasting like finer wines, in spite of the sub-$10 price tag?
