Frogtown Cellars is not just the newest GA Winery to hit the scene (tasting room opens in 4 weeks or so) but it is built with a sophistication and beauty that rivals any winery west of the ol' Miss. Jordan Kritzer, their Winemaker, was kind of enough to select three bottles of their wines for our drawing, in total a $70 value. One is being bottled next week! Wine in moderation is GOOD for you! Wine & Health
It is remarkable how we scan and inspect container labels on foods, a contribution from the FDA. Wine is caught in the middle, since it is an organic product, but due to its tumultous history in the US, we regard it as a spirit, right up there with whiskey, bourbon and vodka. The content of wine is not reviewed and reported by the FDA. What's in wine? Well, no one seems to think about it...a little acidity, tannins, alcohol, carbohydrates, calories, some minerals, sulfites...ok and every bottle is the same, right?

No. In fact, for a $20 billion dollar industry, no one even has a clue what they are drinking.

Truth in Wine takes 30 popular wines each quarter and analyzes them in a 3rd party lab. They found LOTS of information. Here are some condensed findings:

  1. Wines like BV Coastal Cab, Rodney Strong Cab, Beringer Founders Reserve Cab, and Woodbridge Chardonnay--all readily available wines at your grocer--had the lowest sugar levels.

  2. In the test, all white wines were lower than reds in calories.

  3. Given the current trend against Carbs, alcohol has the reverse effect on them, so the wine with the most alcohol, had the fewest carbs.

  4. White wines contain the most sulfites.
